Congratulations to the Academic Decathlon Team

IHHS Academic Decathlon TeamPlease congratulate the members of the Indian Hills Academic Decathlon team -- we just learned tonight that we placed 1st at the Regional Competition and are moving on to States! The members are Nigel DaSilva, Harrison Chen, Tara Haymon, Megan Swenson, Maria DeOliveira, Ami Patel, Sarah Torres, Jon Forsyth, Sorab Taneja, Nicole Glushanok, Jack Stathis, Johnny Lai, Emily Brackenbury, Shivani Patel, Jasmine Ho, and AJ Ilardi.

The following students competed as our starters and earned the following awards:

  • Nigel DaSilva was our team's MVP and the highest scoring competitor in the entire region in the Scholastic Division. He earned gold medals for essay, math, language/literature, music, art, science, and social science. He also earned silver medals for economics and speech. 
  • Harrison Chen earned a silver medal in social science, bronze medals in speech and interview, and honorable mention in art, essay, and language/literature. 
  • Tara Haymon earned a gold medal in language/literature and a bronze medal in essay. 
  • Megan Swenson earned honorable mentions in economics and music.
  • Maria DeOliveira earned a gold medal in interview and a silver medal in math.
  • Ami Patel earned a bronze medal in math, and honorable mentions in interview and music.
  • Sarah Torres earned a silver medal in art and interview, and an honorable mention in speech. 
  • Jon Forsyth earned a gold medal in social science, silver medals in speech and economics, bronze medals in language/literature and interview, and honorable mentions in essay, art, and science. Jon was also the 2nd highest scoring competitor in the region for the Varsity Division. 

The following students competed as alternates and also earned the following awards:

  • Sorab Taneja earned silver medals in economics and social science and a bronze medal in math. 
  • Emily Brackenbury earned a gold medal in language/literature. 
  • AJ Ilardi earned silver medals in social science and art, and a bronze medal in music.

The team also took first place in the Super Quiz Relay, in which the starting team directly faced off against the other schools in the region concerning this year’s topic, World War II. 

The state finals will take place at Ramapo High School on Saturday, March 4.
