Project Adventure 

Unit Summary


Students will take part in a variety of team building and initiative problem solving activities as well as group games to create a cooperative learning environment while developing critical thinking and communication skills. Students will develop self-esteem and self-confidence by using the “challenge by choice” full-value contract of Project Adventure while challenging themselves on the high ropes course. The unit is designed to offer a nontraditional activity that is less competitive and emphasizes team building, cooperation and building self-confidence. It will help to have students understand that challenge, enjoyment, creativity, self expression, teamwork, cooperation and social interaction are important, life-enhancing experiences that can be a part of low and high Project Adventure elements.


The students will know:

  • How to develop effective problem solving, communication and decision-making skills.
  • How to properly spot, belay and climb on the High Ropes course.
  • How to give safety assistance including spotting to fellow students as they enter into limited risk taking activities
  • The importance of developing leadership skills. 

The students will be able to demonstrate:


  • Basic trust in classmates in matters pertaining to personal safety.
  • Improved self-confidence in individual and group challenges.
  • The ability to work cooperatively to reach group goals.
  • A working knowledge of the basic knots and equipment necessary to participate safely in the low and high ropes challenge activities.


  • Students are monitored by teacher supervision and interaction.
  • Teacher will be observing for appropriateness of behavior in student actions and interactions as well as participation during class.
  • Students will be assessed on their ability to demonstrate knowledge of fundamental skills, techniques and safety measures.
  • Students will be assessed by their ability to preform the safety check and proper climbing commands.
  • Students maybe given a written test on the materials.

High Ropes Unit


Fundamentals / Skills

  • Students will be able to put on a climbing harness.
  • Students will be able to tie a figure eight knot on a bight, with a backup knot.
  • Students will know how to properly use a carabineer, belay device.
  • Students will go through the proper safety check before climbing and use the proper commands and dialogue.
  • Students will be able to perform the role of anchor, back-up belayer, rope tender, ladder holder, belayer and climber.
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of the safety rules and regulations that must be followed while climbing and belaying.
  • Students will increase their personal confidence and trust of classmates.
  • Students will use teamwork and cooperation to achieve common goals.
